Children from different backgrounds learning Dutch together

A good new start in the Netherlands

Getting to know a new country, making new friends and learning Dutch together. We help children feel at home and grow with confidence.

Welcome, newcomer

We are glad you are here

Learning a language is easier when a child feels safe, seen and welcome.

Every year, children who grew up in another country start at primary schools in West-Friesland. Some attend school in the Netherlands for the first time. Children aged four to six mainly learn a new language through play with peers in a local reception class. Children aged six to twelve can learn to speak, understand, read and write Dutch intensively in a newcomer class. Together, we build a strong start in Dutch education.

Parent registering a child for the newcomer class

Register a child
for the newcomer class

The primary school close to home helps parents and carers with the first step of the registration.

After the registration form is received, the newcomer class will contact you for an introductory meeting. The form is available in Dutch and English so that parents and education professionals can provide the same complete information.

Our four school locations

Newcomers West-Friesland operates from four primary schools. This makes suitable language education available in several places across the region, close to home and in a safe, familiar environment for every child in West-Friesland.
